This is a nice, versatile, non-stamping tutorial. What did I say ??? --Non-stamping??? Wait --- Come back! PLEASE don't go!!! This is seriously worth your time. You can use this tutorial for your cards, scrapbook pages and making "Peek-a-Boo!" windows on boxes. The best thing is that you can make them ANY size you want. Does the flexibility and versatility this tutorial has to offer intrigue you? Remember this is all about your needs, so you are welcome to duplicate the projects made or apply the idea to your own.
Supplies Needed:
- Card Stock (Pages 163-165 of the Spring-Summer Catalog)
- Friskas Paper Cutter (PN 104152, $24.95)
- Cutting Blade Refills (PN 104153, $5.95)
- Clear Plastic Ruler
After you have digested these Peek-a-boo window instructions, the next post will be using theses Peek-a-Boo window on a card! Let’s not get ahead of ourselves (Just remember to come back on Monday to see a new tutorial)!
Let's get started.
Step 1: Determine the size and location of the desired window
The size of the stamped image appearing in the "Pee-A-Boo!" window is 2.25" x 1.75". The layout of the card is shown below.
To make our math simple, the size of our window will be 2.25" x 2". The window will be 1" from the top of the card and 1.25" from the side of a 4.25" x 5.5" card. For those of you who like Math here is the math used to find the windows location.
Width = w1+w2+w3
Length = L1+L2+L3
When you want the window centered w1=w3 & L1 = L3
In our example, Width = 4-1/4". w1 = w2. Length = 5-1/2" and L1 does Not equal L3.
Width = 4-1/4", w1=w3=1" & w2 = 2-1/4"
Length = 5-1/2", L1 = 1", L2 = 2", L3 = 2-1/2" = (Length - L1 - L3)
Knowing these dimensions will help you to modify this example to make any size window you want.
Step 2: Draw the outline of the window on the inside cover of your card.
We’re going to use our paper cutter again in a similar fashion as used to create our score line in the "Perfect Crisp Fold" post. We will be using the paper cutter to draw guidelines, scoring and cutting.
- Remove the cutting blade from the paper cutter.
- Open the card so that you are looking at the inside of the card. Place the card in the paper cutter as shown below. The top edge is aligned with the cutting groove, and the front cover edge is firmly aligned against the black plate of the cutter.
- Slide the card to the right 1" (L1). The left side of the paper will now line up with the 4-1/2" mark. Place a pencil in the Cutting Blade Groove and lightly draw a line that intersects with the score mark on the card. The picture below shows a pen in the cutting blade groove. A pen was used in the photographs for clarity. Be careful to make light pencil marks only, as you do not want the marks to show through the cardstock onto the front of the finished card.
- Slide the paper to the right 2" (L2). The left side of the paper will now line up with the 2-1/2" (L3) mark. Draw the second line.
- Rotate the card 90° counter-clockwisse so that the edge refered to as the "top Inside Cover" is against the back plate of the paper cutter. Slide the cardstock to the left 1" (w1), so that the left side of the card aligns with 1" mark.
- Draw a line between the previously drawn lines when the left side of the paper aligns with the 1" mark (L1), the 2-1/8" (L1+L2/2) and 3-1/4" (L1+ L2) as shown above.
Step 3: Cut top, bottom & interior slits.
In this step we will be cutting the 3 slits for the window. Make sure to use a sharp blade when making these cuts. If you use a dull blade the sides will be jagged looking, like those shown in the picture below.
The picture below shows the lines that will be cut and those that will be scored.
Rotate the card stock 90° so that it is in the same orientation as the picture below. Set-up the cardstock in the paper cutter as shown. In the above photograph, some guidelines were taken out using Photoshop for clarity. Since these lines will be there when you cut, they were left in the next photograph. Stop and Start were added to show you where to start the cut and stop the cut.
It is important to line up the small arrows on the Cutting Blade with the start (crosshatched) line. The picture below shows a close-up of these arrows.
Once the arrows are aligned with the start (crosshatched) line, press the cutting blade down to pierce the paper then pull the cutting blade toward you until the arrow on the cutting blade aligns with the crosshatched line marked stop.
After the first slit is cut, slide the cardstock to the right until the cutting blade aligns with the second cut line and repeat the instructions above to cut the second line.
For the 3rd slit, rotate the cardstock 90° and align the middle line, the line between the 2 crosshatched lines, with the cutting blade. Once the cutting blade arrow (see above picture) is aligned with the top (previously cut) line, press the cutting blade down to pierce the paper then pull the cutting blade toward you until the arrow on the cutting blade aligns with the second previously cut line. For the next step, keep the cardstock in the paper cutter.
Step 4: Score the Side Panels of the Windows.
Change the cutting blade with the scoring blade. If you don’t have a scoring blade, remove the cutting blade and use your Bone Folder instead.
Slide the cardstock to the left until the crosshatched lines align with the cutting blade groove. Using the bone folder of scoring blade, align the arrows of the scoring blade with the upper most previously cut line (See "Start" last picture in Step 3 for reference). Press down and drag the bone cutter in the cutting grove or the scoring blade until the second previously cut line is reached (See "Start" last picture in Step 3 for reference).
Slide the cardstock to the right until the second crosshatched lines align with the cutting blade groove. Again, using the bone folder of scoring blade, align the arrows of the scoring blade with the uppermost previously cut line (See "Start" last picture in Step 3 for reference). Press down and drag the bone cutter in the cutting grove or the scoring blade until the second previously cut line is reached (See "Start" last picture in Step 3 for reference).
Remove the card stock from the paper cutter. On a flat surface, open the Peek-a-Boo! Window and rub the fold with the edge of the Bone Folder to make a nice crisp fold. Rub the adhesive remover over the edges of the window to remove any stray paper. It will give the window edges a nice clean look.
