At my first Stampin' Up! demonstration, the demonstrator Erin Perry who is now my up-line, demonstrated this very cool tile demo using "All in the Family" to create a coaster. A few months later, I decided to hold a Mother's Day Stamp Camp. I wanted to create a trivet using the "Wild Rose Stamp Set" (PN 107377, $36.95). I researched stamping on tile and came across Tumbled Tile Coasters on the Stampin' with the Goddess Blog. Erin and Colleen ultimately taught me to stamp on tile; but, it was my son who inspired the "All in the Family" Trivet.
One rainy day, my son who was bored out of his little mind asked me to draw a picture. I responded with "How about we STAMP a picture?" . Being four and only able to use "Mommy's Stamps" on special, ultra, supervised occasions, he jumped at the idea (literally) with enthusiasm. When we were done making this little trivet, many a baby wipe was used and a little boy was very excited that his mommy had helped him make a picture of his family. I don't think that he was intending for extremely hot things to be placed on his picture, but what are you going to do! One must be practical.

8" x 8 " Tile |
||
Peel & Stick Felt |
||
Fixative Spray |
Instructions:
- Wash & thoroughly dry the tile. It is very important that the tile is dry.
- Using Post-it Notes, create a 5" x "5 square.
- Place the square in the center of the tile, sticky side down to masking the center of the tile.
- Place Post-It Notes, 3/4" around the outer edge of the tile. This will leave 1/4" thick outline of a square exposed on the tile.
- Apply StazOn Jet Black Ink to a brayer and roll it over the tile until the 1/4" opening is covered. Be careful not to move the Post-It Notes in the process.
- When the Ink is dry, remove the inner layer of Post-it Notes.
- Use the desired stamps for the "All in the Family" Set to depict your family. The "happy together" stamp from the "Family Phrase Set" can also be used as a nice accent.
- When finished, remove the remaining Post-It Notes from the outer edges. Use the "All in the Family" and/or "Family Accessory" Sets to decorate the boarder of the trivet.
- When the Ink is dry, use a damp Blender Pen and the Stampin' Pastels to add color to the border stamps.
- Spray Tile with a light coat of fixative. You may apply a second coat if desired after first coat dries.
Tips (AKA learn from my mistakes!):
- Do not buy tiles with stain resistant coatings. The pastels do not stick to tiles with coatings. Tiles with rough surfaces work best.
- Spray tile with several light coats allowing time between each coat to dry. A single heavy coat of fixative can cause the ink to bleed especially when applying the initial coat to the tile.
- Post-It Notes work best for masking. Tape can cause smudging if applied to a stamped image.
- If a stamped image is not to your liking, use a baby wipe immediately to remove the StazOn ink. Allow the area to dry, and re-stamp. (It's like the edit "undo" command on your computer.)
- Use a Stamp-a-ma-Jig to improve alignment. Remember not to use the StazOn ink on the alignment sheet. If you want to use StazOn Ink, use a piece of Vellum paper as your alignment sheet instead of the transparency sheet that comes with the Stamp-a-ma-Jig.
I hope you find this little "Family" project FUN! It certainly provided a very entertaining afternoon for one mommy & a 4 year old boy!!!
Happy Creating! Remember to come back on Monday for something new and exciting and new!
Love your tile. I just got the All in the Family Stamp set and I think I'll give this a try. Hint about Stazon and the SAMJ plastic...you can use Stampin' Up! Stazon Cleaner on the plastic and it will take off the stains both from Stazon and black ink that you let dry too long on the plastic.
